Things I Learned at/from the Dave Ramsey Chapel

I spoke today in Nashville, TN at Lampo, headquarters for the Dave Ramsey team. They hold a weekly chapel for the entire team of 300 folks and have super-famous speakers and me come and speak. Prior to speaking I pummeled my long time friend, Dino Evangelista, who leads a team there with organizational culture questions. From the simple, ‘what do people wear to work?’ to the complex ‘what is the strategy of the organization?’. That helped me be a more effective communicator. I think one of the greatest tools a leader possesses is the ability to see, listen and ask good questions. Heres a snapshot of what I learned from watching, listening and asking:

  • The right culture is quickly contagious.
  • Everyone works together when everyone is vested.
  • When the vision is clear everyone is clear on the vision. (that’s so simple but is so true)
  • Rewarding your team not only brings fun, but care which grows trust. (these people freak over November and December)
  • Jon Acuff is as funny and authentic at 7 a.m. at Cracker Barrel as he is before thousands at a conference.
  • The Loveless Cafe has the best fried chicken and biscuits this city boy has ever eaten. That has nothing to do with Dave Ramsey. It’s just good to know should you be traveling to Nashville.
  • God can put you anywhere he wants, when he wants, for whatever purpose he has decided, all for his glory.

What I learned from Dr. Tony Evans

Tony Evans. Beast. What more can I say? The guy brings it. Best part is that what he brings is Gods word. I listened to him twice on Thursday live and in person. Here are the notes I took from his messages. For the sake of truth I have not edited these down. These are straight from my twitter. What a day and night. He spoke from Mark and I Peter in the morning session and Ephesians in the night session. Still processing what he brought:

Morning Session

  • ‘Lot of times we are building our church and just using HIS name’
  • ‘the moment the church exists for the church it it is operating in a way it was not created’
  • ‘there’s a school next to every church…this is where u can reach ur community.’
  • ‘how can we have all these churches on all these corners and still have all this mess. churches that have missed the kingdom’

Evening Session

  • ‘there is something about the Lord that requires us to stand firm.’
  • ‘Satan has to use schemes bc he has to pretend he has power.’
  • ‘communion has been reduced to bread and quiet organ music. Communion is Gods way of letting u tell Satan to go to hell’
  • ‘armor of God. U have and u take. Have = all the time. Take=as needed.
  • ‘truth is Gods view of any subject. Gods words is the final word. U start w it’
  • ‘peace is not the absence of trouble’
  • ‘u kno u r where God wants u when u can chill when their is chaos around u’
  • ‘the physical realm is not the root of ur problem’
  • ‘authority is the legit use of power. On the cross Jesus removed Satans authority.’
  • ‘it’s not how much faith it’s about the object of ur faith. Faith is a acting like God is telling the truth’
